2009 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 94 Alcohol by volume: 16.7% Price at time of purchase: $75.00 (from winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): I love the Martinelli Zins, but I admit it's often their crazy liqueur-like alcohol and density that make them so interesting. The '09 Jackass, though, is just flat-out spectacular in a more "conventional" way. Despite its 16.7% alcohol, it comes across not so much like a liqueur, even though its flavor density certainly approaches that, as like a beautifully balanced, seamlessly full-bodied, classic Zin - in fact, one of the very best Zins I've ever tasted. Very complex in the nose and mouth and finish, and the layers keep building over time ... deep dark cherry, plum, and blueberry fruit, smokey Scotch-like notes, licorice, cinnamon, cassis liqueur, etc. etc. I remember reading a "Wine Advocate" review of this wine that recommended 10+ years of bottle aging, but I can't imagine it's going to get more delicious than it is here at age 6. It was the perfect wine to welcome in the new year. - HK 2015-12-31 [Back] |
