2012 Martinelli Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 91 Alcohol by volume: 17.3% Price at time of purchase: $52.00 (from winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): I actually served this wine with a chocolate dessert, assuming its "modest" 17.3% alcohol level would make it something of a port-like accompaniment. But I'm constantly surprised at how Martinelli can produce wines with insanely high alcohol that do not feel syrupy in the mouth, nor taste raisiny or over-ripe. This wine was a WINE, not a port. The usual panoply of flavors from Martinelli Zins - earthy dark berries, roasted figs, kirsch, licorice. Obviously alcoholic, but not obtrusively so in either the mouth or finish. These wines are an experience to drink, that's for sure. - HK 2016-04-26 [Back] |
