An extremely flavorful, muscular, yet well-balanced dessert-style Zinfandel. The grapes are not late-harvest and thus have none of the pruney notes that can sometimes be intrusive in such wines. Rather, the wine is made by freezing the crushed grapes, removing the dilute ice water, and slowly fermenting the remaining concentrated juice. The label indicates 16.5% residual sugar - a misprint?? - yet sweetness is not at the forefront of sensations in this rich wine. It's got deep dark roasted fig and chocolate notes along with suggestions of macerated cherries and plums. Delicious and fairly-priced dessert wine that's pretty much perfection with all things chocolate. [Price for 375 ml] - HK 2010-10-28
