1987 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 93 Alcohol by volume: 12.5% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (library wine) Type: Cabernet / Bordeaux Principal varietal(s): Cabernet A superlative Cabernet provided through the kindness of our friend, Bob Perkins. Healthy deep purple color, fresh as the day it was bottled. Impeccably balanced from start to finish. Complex nose has classic smoky, spicy cassis fruit, sage, mint, and a touch of "first-growth" lead pencil. Mouth-filling flavors also contain a nice cranberry component. Long, pristine finish. This wine is superb now and its balance suggests it will be there awhile. [Tasted again eight years later, on 7-1-2010. Still superb, though perhaps not quite as vigorous as it was in 2002. Savory elements have come to the fore, though still with plenty of fruit in the background. Not close to displaying old-age characteristics.] - HK 2002-06-29 [Back] |
