1997 Napa Ridge Pinot Noir North Coast, California WB Rating: 80 Alcohol by volume: 13.0% Price at time of purchase: $8.49 () Type: Pinot Noir / Burgundy Principal varietal(s): Pinot Noir In recent years Napa Ridge has made the best bargain Pinot Noir one can buy -- varietally correct, smooth, and sometimes surprisingly full. That being said, the '97 is not up to previous vintages, and at this time is edging towards the point of being over the hill. It has a reasonably on-target Pinot Noir taste -- though at the light end of the spectrum -- but the body and depth of the '97 at this point are more like a reasonably good generic Beaujolais. Light red in color, very soft in the mouth, with low-key but clean and pleasant strawberry and cherry flavors. No tannin or ageability at this point, so drink up. - HK 2000-05-10 [Back] |
