2005 Old World Winery Syrah "Rockin' R Ranch" Mendocino, California WB Rating: 92 Alcohol by volume: 13.7% Price at time of purchase: $25.00 (from Winery) Type: Syrah Principal varietal(s): Syrah Brilliant opaque deep ruby in color, this is an exhilarating Syrah that's more similar to the fruit-dominated 2003 than the beefier 2004. It absolutely overflows with mouth-filling blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, and black cherry fruit (with blueberry dominating), has a nice dose of spiciness and a very subtle sweet herb character that reminded me of rosemary. At this point I didn't detect much of the roasted meat notes that I sometimes find in Syrah - it's like an elixir of berry fruit. Despite the probable presence of a boatload of tannin, the texture is silky and seamless from start to finish, and it comes across as beautifully balanced and warm-hearted. As richly flavored as it is, it is not remotely heavy or clumsy, and possesses only 13.7% alcohol. Drinking beautifully right now, though it's hard to believe it won't provide pleasure for years to come. (Price estimated.) - HK 2009-07-07 [Back] |
