2009 Old World Winery Arbourious Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 91 Alcohol by volume: 15.0% Price at time of purchase: $50.00 (from winery) Type: Rhone-style Red Principal varietal(s): Arbouriou This is an unusual red to say the least - old vine, dry-farmed, head-pruned Arbouriou from a 4 acre plot in the Sheri Martinelli Vineyard on Martinelli Road. Deep dark purple to the rim. Forceful aromas of ripe cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, buttery pastry, and flowers. Big, mouth-coating texture and long finish, lots of ripe, edgy tannin. But through it all, a tart, piquant freshness. Closest in style, I suppose, to a French wine from Provence or the Languedoc, but more powerful and penetrating. Pricey, but it's one of a kind and it's delicious. - HK 2013-11-01 [Back] |
