2009 Old World Winery Merlot, Mounts Bench Vineyard Dry Creek, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 12.1% Price at time of purchase: $30.00 (from winery) Type: Merlot Principal varietal(s): Merlot Winemaker Darek Trowbridge has found a super source for several red varietals at Mounts Bench Vineyard. The 2009 Merlot, despite the unusually low (for California) 12.1% alcohol level, exhibits excellent fruit intensity and depth. Attractive, complex nose of earthy cherry and red currant fruit along with subtle notes of smoke, tobacco, chocolate, and roasted walnuts. In the mouth the wine has a nice sense of ripeness along with bright acidity that is mellowed somewhat with food or extended airing. This wine was also tasted after having been opened for a day and continued to be delicious with no sign of flatness. - HK 2012-06-16 [Back] |
