1999 Old World Winery Zinfandel Laughlin Vineyard Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 90 Alcohol by volume: 16.0% Price at time of purchase: $27.00 (The Wine Shop, Healdsburg) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): Zinfandel Huge Zin, one of the biggest we have tasted. Purchased at a small wine store in Healdsburg on the advice of the salesman there, this wine has the density of port, the pure essence of Zinfandel fruit, and the balance to avoid clumsiness. Extremely rich -- almost over the top -- with deep plum, nuclear density cassis, Merlot-like chocolate, and spicy oak. It must be a late-harvest Zin, but does not have the overly-sweet feel that can make those wines taste out of balance. We'd recommend drinking it in its testosterone-crazed youth. The only question is what to serve it with. We had it with barbecued pork, laden in spicy sauce, and the wine basically blew it away. - WB Team 2001-07-19 [Back] |
