2002 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel Late-Picked "Caboose" Sonoma County, California WB Rating: 90 Alcohol by volume: 15.6% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Library wine) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 95% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah This wine, from a small section of the Nervo Vineyard, is drinking astonishingly well at the grand old age of 12 years - well beyond the point where most Zins are evolving into that cedary/funky stage and losing their fruit. In fact, I had tried this wine close to 5 years ago with almost identical tasting notes. The small amount of residual sugar (0.3%) must be enough to preserve this wine, since it's utterly fresh and vibrant, full of dark berry, plum, chocolate, and spice. Neither the residual sugar nor the high alcohol detracts much from the structure and tastiness of this fine wine, which is rich and full but not heavy or cloying. It's marginally sweet for regular meals, though not bad at all with barbecue, and is outstanding with chocolate desserts. - HK 2014-01-25 [Back] |
