1980 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel Howell Mountain Howell Mountain, Napa, California WB Rating: 80 Alcohol by volume: 14.8% Price at time of purchase: $ (Library wine) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 65% Zin, 28% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane Supplied through the generosity of our friend The Wiz, an interesting taste of pre-historic Zin. The color was a translucent red/purple with a hint of amber. Little fruit (normally the death knell for Zins), yet an interesting nose of oak, mint, earth, and tar. Viscous mouth feel with a sweet edge of caramel. Certainly not gone, and if your taste buds are tuned to well-aged Zins this one still has a lot going for it. To many of the group, the wine was not especially appealing since it has little of the forward fruit we love in young Zins. On the other hand, how many wineries other than Ridge make such clean and long-lived wines of all types? - WB Team 2001-07-19 [Back] |
