The oldest Zinfandel in the WineBork inventory is now history. Unlike most old Zinfandels, this one had not lost its spark and was a fun experience to drink. The flavors had definitely evolved beyond the typical forward Zinfandel fruits, though there was still a berry core. Beautiful ruby red rather than purple, but with no sign of amber. Full-bodied feel in the mouth. Elegant, soft, and with an earthy, leather-like, complex nose and flavors that reminded me of a good Rioja. Paul Draper wrote on the label, in 1988, that the tannins were lower than usual but he still expected six or seven years of additional positive development. Would you believe 12? I'd say it's time to drink it up, but with this wine's quality that's not exactly a sacrifice. (H.K.) - WB Team 2000-05-28
