1990 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs Dry Creek, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 13.8% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Library wine) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 80% Zin, 10% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignan, 4% Grenache This is one of the very best old Zinfandels we've ever tasted. While most Zins are seriously losing their fruit and freshness at age 5 - 7 (or less), this one is still absolutely delicious at age 12. The fruit is certainly muted compared to what it was in its youth, but there is still plenty of plum and berry fruit in evidence, as well as a full, round, warm feel in the mouth. The signs of age are there -- the purple color is getting a bit muddier, and the lack of tannin lessens the overall grip and makes the finish feel a little sweeter -- but the legendary Ridge balance scores again in producing this great wine. While it should be drunk up in the next year or so, it's had a great run. We are most indebted to our friend Bob Perkins, who kindly donated this wine to the Winebork group for our tasting. - WB Team 2002-07-11 [Back] |
