2005 S.A. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany WB Rating: 91 Alcohol by volume: 9.0% Price at time of purchase: $12.99 (Premier Cru) Type: Riesling Principal varietal(s): Riesling I've slowly drunk through a half case of this wine over the last six years, and it's never tasted better than it does right now at age 9. Though in earlier days I thought I preferred the less unctuous 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese from the same maker, this Wehlener is tasting absolutely brilliant right now. Extremely deep, rich flavors are dominated by apricot and a melange of honeyed white fruits and sweet spices. Tremendous fruit density - hard to believe this is "only" a Spatlese. Yet the perfect acid balance keeps this wine fresh, clean, and not cloying. It has slowly evolved over the years from a sensational apertif wine to a sensational dessert wine. Purchased during an outstanding sale at Premier Cru. I wished I'd purchased a few more bottles. - HK 2014-04-29 [Back] |
