2002 San Alejandro Los Rocas Garnacha de San Alejandro Calatayud, Aragon, Spain WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 13.6% Price at time of purchase: $6.99 (K&L) Type: Spanish red Principal varietal(s): Grenache Another reason Parker's "Wine Advocate" is worth its weight in gold. Along with the $600 Leroy Burgundies you can find inexpensive gems like this one that you'd never try otherwise. This is a stupendous buy for $6.99 -- and, since it's been Parkerized, probably hard to find. (K&L sold out in one day.) This wine still has a touch of youthful austerity, but with airing it shows a wonderful nose of cherries, red currants, vanilla, flowers, Herbes de Provence, and lots of ground black pepper. Medium bodied, excellent balance, with a chewy finish of meat and black cherry. May be under-rated if it continues to develop. - WB team 2004-04-06 [Back] |
