Quinta Cruz is a label used by Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard for its wines made from grapes associated with Spain and Portugal but grown in California. This Verdehlo (the grape used to make Madeira) is grown in the warm Alta Mesa region near Lodi. It's a flavorful and unusual wine. Attractive, piquant mix of fruits - especially apricot and grapefruit - along with caramel and spices vaguely similar to those in Gewurztraminer. Very full - it borders on being too heavy, especially as it warms up - and slightly sweet-feeling in the mouth, oily textured. Definitely needs to be served cold. Good with rich white sauces. - HK 2010-03-28
