2008 Seghesio Defiant Sonoma County, California WB Rating: 90 Alcohol by volume: 15.4% Price at time of purchase: $48.00 (winery) Type: Italian-style Red Principal varietal(s): 30% Aglianico, 34% Syrah, 36% Cabernet The 2008 Defiant, a near 1:1:1 mix of Aglianico, Syrah, and Cabernet, is much softer and more open-knit than the 2007 was at a similar age. This is a big, ripe, chewy super-Tuscan analog, with bright cherry, plum, and currant flavors along with a serious dose of smoky oak. Seems more rustic and chalky feeling in the mouth than would a pure Cabernet or Syrah, but it's seriously endowed and well-balanced. Pricey but right on the mark. - HK 2014-02-15 [Back] |
