1985 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 94 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $ (Library wine) Type: Cabernet / Bordeaux Principal varietal(s): 100% Cabernet Perhaps the best Silver Oak I've ever tasted. My dinner partners and I will be in Mr. Colbert's debt for some time. This is a superlative Cabernet in the richly flavored, richly oaked Silver Oak style. But it surpassed my expectations in several regards: (1) the complexity of the wine was stunning: not just the "usual" great Silver Oak cassis and sweet oak, but ever-expanding layers of fruit, oak, smoke, mint, eucalyptus; (2) the quality and balance of this wine was outstanding, even at age 17. I always expect wines with this much oak to become unbalanced with age. This one was still seamlessly integrated. Yet another reason to want to become independently wealthy. - HK 2002-02-16 [Back] |
