2007 Varner Wines Foxglove Zinfandel Paso Robles WB Rating: 85 Alcohol by volume: 14.6% Price at time of purchase: $11.99 (K&L) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 86% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah I really wanted to love this wine since the price is so remarkably low and I've always greatly admired the Foxglove Chardonnays for their excellence and price/performance ratio. However, this Zinfandel is just not made in a style I enjoy. Very earthy nose of prunes, sweet berries, and chocolate. Sweet-feeling and (to my taste) overly heavy and somewhat unstructured in the mouth, very like the late-picked Zins I used to struggle with from Ridge. The texture and sweetness also make it, for me, a troublesome food wine. I purchased a case of this wine before tasting it based on super reviews from Parker and others - oops! A preference for this sweeter, heavier style is a matter of taste, and I'm sure many others will have a better feeling about the wine than I do. - HK 2010-01-10 [Back] |
