2007 Woodenhead Zinfandel Martinelli Road Vineyard Old Vine Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 16.5% Price at time of purchase: $38.25 (from winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): Zinfandel The grapes for this potent Zin come from Martinelli's Jackass property, and from 127-year-old vines, so there's no surprise in the 16.5% alcohol level. The wine itself is interesting, not to say unusual. Lots of complexity in the nose, with notes of macerated cherries, cassis, prunes, tobacco, earth, dried herbs, and a strong smoky undercurrent. A bit angular in the mouth to my taste, maybe from all the alcohol, and a bit outside my Zin comfort range. But a fun wine and a conversation starter among Zin lovers, that's for sure. - HK 2012-06-11 [Back] |
