2007 Yalumba Winery Chardonnay "Wild Ferment" Eden Valley, Barossa, South Australia WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $10.99 (Costco) Type: Chardonnay Principal varietal(s): Chardonnay After drinking a lot of inexpensive, soft, tasty but simple Australian Shirazes, I expected this bargain Chardonnay to be sweet, soft, alcoholic, and oaky. Wrong! This wine is instead very French-like in texture - crisp, leesy, mineral-laden, great with food. Flavors highlighted by citrus and lemon curd along with roasted nuts and a strong wet-gravel-like mineral note. Very little sense of oak influence, though the wine is aged at least partially in oak; has the feel of a non-malolactic acid balance. Reminiscent of a nicely made French Macon, this is an excellent buy. - HK 2009-03-04 [Back] |
