1998 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Riesling Gueberschwihr Alsace, France WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 13.0% Price at time of purchase: $11.00 (Premier Cru) Type: Riesling Principal varietal(s): Riesling A ridiculously good wine for the price (Premier Cru sale). Ripe buttery peaches, nuts, minerals, and Alsatian spice in the rich, perfumed nose. Admirable precision in the layers of flavors, perfect acid balance to keep this full wine from being remotely heavy or clumsy. Very slightly off-dry, though even that hint of sugar in the finish may simply be a reflection of the wine's richness. A delicious wine, one that would convince any doubters that there are great whites out there besides Chardonnay. In terms of quality, Zind Humbrecht's "bottom of the line" is where most other winemakers wish their "top of the line" would be. - HK 2002-10-08 [Back] |
